Contura 886 Wood Burning Stove Installation in Horsforth, Leeds
A challenging two-stage installation by Leeds Stove Centre
The finished Contura 886 installation in Horsforth, Leeds.
A Stove Installation That Needed Careful Planning
Not every wood burning stove installation is straightforward. This recent project in Horsforth, Leeds required careful planning, roof alterations, a complete twin-wall flue system and a bespoke hearth made from a template taken on site.
The customer chose a Contura 886 Style wood burning stove. The model has a nominal 5kW output and 81% efficiency, with glass to the front and sides giving an excellent view of the flames. The tall, contemporary design suited the room particularly well.
Why We Completed the Job in Two Stages
We deliberately carried out this installation over two visits. The first stage was used to establish the exact stove and flue position, complete the more involved flue and roof work, and make an accurate template for the hearth. Once the hearth had been manufactured to the template, we returned for the final fitting of the hearth and stove.
Before installation: the position was carefully marked out to work with the room and decorative wall panelling.
Stage One – Setting Out the Flue Route
The flue position had to be carefully measured before any work started. Because the stove was being installed in a finished room with detailed wall panelling and a sloping ceiling, accuracy was important from the outset.
The ceiling marked ready for the flue penetration.
Roof Work and Timber Alterations
Once we opened the roof area, we found that a timber was positioned where the flue needed to pass. A substantial section of roof tiles therefore had to be carefully stripped back to give us access. The timber was cut back as required and a new supporting timber was installed so that the flue could pass through the correct position before the roof was made good around the new penetration.
Roof tiles stripped back to gain access to the structure and create the correct flue route.

External Twin-Wall Flue System
With no conventional chimney available for the stove, we installed an insulated twin-wall flue system. Externally, the system had to be offset around the lower roof and then taken vertically up the side elevation of the property, with suitable wall supports, before terminating above roof level.

A Bespoke Hearth Made to Fit the Room
A standard rectangular hearth would not have given the finish we wanted in this corner. During the first visit we made an exact template so the finished hearth could follow the shape of the room and sit neatly against the existing walls and herringbone flooring.

Stage Two – Hearth, Stove and Commissioning
Once the bespoke hearth was ready, we returned for the second stage. The hearth was fitted into position, the Contura 886 was installed and connected to the flue system, and the installation was completed and commissioned.

Before leaving, we also spent time with the customer showing them how to use the stove correctly – including lighting the fire, controlling the air supply, refuelling and getting the best performance from the appliance.
The Finished Contura 886
The finished result is a great example of the work that can sit behind what eventually looks like a very clean and simple stove installation. The tall black Contura and matching flue work perfectly with the high ceiling, decorative panelling and herringbone floor, while the bespoke hearth gives the installation a properly finished appearance.
